Clinicians Available for Direct Consultation

The UVM CORA Clinician Office Hours program offers free and confidential virtual consultation by clinicians with a specialty in the treatment of substance use disorder (SUD) focusing on substance use evaluation and management.

The UVM CORA Clinician Office Hours program is intended for healthcare providers or others directly serving people with SUD in rural communities. To confirm that your organization is located in a HRSA-designated rural area, enter your address here.

Please complete the online form to register for Clinician Office Hours. Sessions will be held Thursdays from 12:00 – 1:00pm ET. Registration will close 24 hours before each session.

Clinician Consultants

Brady Heward, MD

Dr. Heward is an Assistant Professor at the UVM Larner College of Medicine and a Clinical Instructor at Yale School of Medicine. He specializes in addiction psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry and works clinically at the Addiction Treatment Program at the UVM Medical Center and on the Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry unit at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital. He serves as a mentor in the REACH fellowship (Recognizing and Eliminating disparities in Addiction through Culturally informed Healthcare) through Yale and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. Dr. Heward graduated from medical school at the Yale School of Medicine. He completed a general psychiatry residency, a public psychiatry fellowship, and an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Yale. He completed a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at UVM. Dr. Heward has particular interest in health disparities, access to care, and risk and protective factors for adolescent, and young adult substance use.

Peter Jackson, MD

Dr. Jackson is an Assistant Professor at the UVM Larner College of Medicine and UVM Medical Center and Medical Director of the UVMMC Addiction Treatment Center. He specializes in both child and adolescent psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. In both the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry he currently serves on committees responsible for preventing and treating substance use disorders in teens. He completed medical school at the University of Utah School of Medicine, residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center, and completed fellowships in both child and adolescent psychiatry and addiction psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. His writing and teaching have included additional emphasis on the role of parents and family members in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders.

  • Who can register for Clinician Office Hours?

    Any health care or service provider in a HRSA designed rural community who is treating patients with substance use disorders.

  • How many people can attend each session?

    Up to three participants per week can attend. Participants from the same organization must register separately.

  • What does the registration process entail?

    Using the online form:

    • Select the Clinician Office Hours session date
    • Describe the SUD-related issue to be discussed with clinicians
    • Provide background detail about your role and work setting

  • What type of questions can I ask?

    Clinicians can address a spectrum of SUD treatment related topics including specific substances (e.g., opioids, stimulants, alcohol, tobacco), special populations (e.g., adolescents, pregnant people), evidence based best practices (e.g., medication for opioid use disorder {MOUD}, harm reduction, contingency management, motivational interviewing) and many other topics.

  • How far in advance are sessions scheduled?

    Participants register for the next available session. Registration closes 24 hours before each session.

  • How will I access the Office Hours session?

    After you’ve successfully registered, you will receive an email confirmation with further instructions. If you do not receive an email, please contact officehr@uvm.edu

  • Who are the clinician consultants?

    Typically Dr. Heward and/or Dr. Jackson;
    Other members of UVM CORA’s Clinician Advisory Board may also provide consultation during some Clinician Office Hours sessions.

UVM CORA is not a HIPAA covered entity or a business associate of any provider. Healthcare providers should not disclose identifying information or health records of their patients when seeking consultation. The Clinician Office Hours program offers general information and guidance to healthcare providers; the program is not designed to and does not provide professional diagnosis, treatment or direct-care services to patients.
